Need - Rhetoric Terms

Main Content

Need

An underlying issue within a society that either needs to be fixed because it is causing harm to the community or changed because society is advancing. These can include things such as new computers for the library, adding traffic lanes to the city, building more homeless shelters, restricting certain hate speech, or updating the infrastructure to meet state standards.

Flip through the Need flash cards and then practice applying these terms with the political cartoon below.

Title: Columbia Demands her Children

Publisher: J.H. Bufford, Boston, MA

Illustrator: Joseph E. Baker

Date: 1864

Context: Between April 12, 1861, and May 9, 1865, over half a million Americans died during the atrocious Civil War. Multiple citizens railed against Lincoln’s policies because of the high cost and death toll of the war. This war was unique in that it pitted father against son, brother against brother, and cousin against uncle. As a result, most Americans lost their loved ones during the war, while Lincoln planned to mobilize another half a million troops for his cause. Here is an interactive political cartoon from the Library of Congress to explore the issue further.
