The assessments below focus on people and events in the history of Illinois. Illinois history emphasizes the exploration and colonization of the Illinois Country, Illinois statehood, the growth of Chicago, state politics, labor movements, and the influences and connections of national events within the state. Source topics emphasize events in the city of Chicago, slavery and the Civil War in Illinois, and topics related specifically to the Southern Illinois region.
